Paintball 101: Key Terms

  • Marker: Another name for a paintball gun. It "marks" your opponent.
  • Speedball: A fast-paced format typically played on a smaller, often inflatable-field layout, emphasizing quick engagements and teamwork.
  • Rec-Ball: Casual, scenario-based paintball often played in wooded areas or larger, more natural fields.
  • Hopper: The container that sits atop your marker and feeds paintballs into the firing chamber.

Essential Tips for New Players

  • Always Wear Your Mask: Keep it on whenever you’re on the field, even if it fogs up or you think it’s “safe.” Eye injuries can happen in an instant.
  • Chronograph Your Marker: Most fields require a maximum velocity (usually around 280-300 FPS). Properly chrono your gun to avoid hurting other players—and to stay within field rules.
  • Communicate Constantly: Call out enemy positions, coordinate pushes, and let your teammates know if you’re reloading or moving. Good communication can win games.
  • Use Cover & Snap-Shooting: Don’t stand in the open—take cover behind bunkers or natural obstacles. Practice “snap-shooting,” where you quickly pop out to fire a shot, then return to cover.
  • Respect the Field & Other Players: Follow the rules, use a barrel bag in safe zones, and don’t overshoot. Mutual respect fosters a safer, more enjoyable environment.
  • Keep Your Gear Maintained: Clean your barrel, check your hopper batteries (if electronic), and lube your marker according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. A well-maintained setup performs more reliably.
